However, understanding labour-market demand, Post-Graduation Work Permit requirements and current immigration categories can help you make a more informed education decision.
Choose a Program for Your Career — Not Simply for PR
Canada continues to offer international students a wide range of college and university programs. But choosing a field of study has become more important as Post-Graduation Work Permit rules and immigration priorities have changed.
A program that aligns with your abilities, career interests and sectors experiencing labour demand may create useful employment opportunities after graduation. That is different from saying that a particular course leads automatically to Canadian permanent residence.
What Canada Is Prioritizing in 2026
IRCC’s 2026 Express Entry category-based selection includes categories focused on occupations in health care and social services, STEM, skilled trades, education and transport. There are also categories relating to French-language proficiency and selected groups with Canadian work experience.
This does not mean that graduating from a program in one of these fields automatically qualifies a student for an invitation to apply for permanent residence. Express Entry category eligibility generally depends on qualifying work experience and meeting the requirements of an Express Entry immigration program.
Study Fields Worth Exploring in 2026
The following fields may be worth researching because they can connect to areas of labour-market demand or occupations currently reflected in Canada’s immigration priorities. Program availability, PGWP eligibility and professional licensing requirements still need to be checked individually.

Check PGWP Eligibility Before You Apply
If post-graduation work experience is part of your plan, checking Post-Graduation Work Permit eligibility before enrolling is essential. Graduating from a Designated Learning Institution does not automatically make every program PGWP-eligible.
- Confirm that the school is a DLI and that the specific program is PGWP-eligible.
- Bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral graduates do not currently have to meet the PGWP field-of-study requirement.
- Other university programs and college, polytechnic or non-university programs may have a field-of-study requirement if the relevant study permit application was submitted on or after November 1, 2024.
- Where the field-of-study requirement applies, check the exact six-digit CIP code for the program.
- IRCC has frozen the list of PGWP-eligible fields of study for 2026, meaning eligible fields will not be added or removed during the year.
- Most PGWP applicants must now meet language requirements as well.
Current PGWP rules require bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral graduates to meet at least CLB/NCLC 7 in all four language abilities. Other college, polytechnic and non-university graduates generally need at least CLB/NCLC 5, subject to the applicable eligibility rules.

Is the Specific Program PGWP-Eligible?
A school can offer both PGWP-eligible and non-eligible programs. Check the specific program rather than assuming eligibility based on the institution alone.
Does a Field-of-Study Rule Apply to You?
For non-degree programs where the rule applies, confirm the exact program CIP code against IRCC’s current eligible-field list.
What Is the Employment Outlook?
Research the occupation, province, salary range, licensing requirements and realistic entry-level employment opportunities.
Is the Occupation Regulated?
Healthcare, teaching, engineering and many trades can require provincial certification or professional licensing before you can work independently.
Does the Program Fit Your Actual Career Goal?
Choose a program you can realistically complete and use professionally. Immigration policies can change, so a long-term career plan should not depend entirely on one immigration category remaining unchanged.
