Financing Your Dream of Studying Abroad

A successful international education journey begins with more than choosing the right school. It also requires a realistic plan for tuition, housing, transportation, books, insurance and everyday living expenses. Understanding your funding options early can help you make better decisions about your studies in Canada.

Build a Financial Plan Before You Study

Every great educational journey begins with a dream, but turning that dream into reality requires careful financial planning. Students should understand the full cost of their education and explore available funding before committing to an institution or program.

Funding may come from personal savings, family support, scholarships, bursaries, institutional awards, approved education loans or a combination of several sources.

A good financial plan looks beyond tuition. Students should also consider housing, food, transportation, textbooks, health insurance, technology, personal expenses and the cost of travelling to and from Canada.

Explore Different Funding Options

There is no single financing solution that works for every student. Eligibility depends on factors such as citizenship, country of residence, institution, program, academic achievement and financial circumstances.

01

Scholarships

International students may be eligible for scholarships from Canadian institutions, governments, international organizations and other funding bodies. Scholarships can be based on factors such as academic achievement, research, leadership, country of citizenship or area of study.

02

Bursaries & Institutional Awards

Some colleges and universities provide bursaries, entrance awards, research funding and other financial support to eligible international students. Students should review the financial-aid and international-student pages of each institution they are considering.

03

Personal & Family Funding

Savings and financial support from parents, relatives or other sponsors can form an important part of a student’s financial plan. Students applying for a study permit may need to provide documentation showing the availability and source of funds.

04

Education Loans & Lines of Credit

Banks and specialized education-finance companies may provide loans or lines of credit to eligible students. Eligibility, borrowing limits, interest rates, co-signer requirements and repayment terms vary significantly between lenders.

Private Education Loans

Private education financing may help eligible students pay education-related costs that are not fully covered by scholarships, savings or other funding. Depending on the lender and loan agreement, eligible expenses may include:

  • Tuition and compulsory school fees
  • Textbooks and learning materials
  • Housing or student accommodation
  • Transportation
  • Technology and school supplies
  • Living expenses

The actual permitted use of borrowed funds depends on the lender’s terms and conditions. Students should never assume that every loan covers every expense.

Where Students May Explore Financing

Education financing is available through a variety of financial institutions, but international-student eligibility differs significantly. Students should check directly with each lender before submitting an application.

Canadian Banks

Major Canadian banks offer different forms of student borrowing, including student lines of credit. However, international students may face additional requirements such as an eligible Canadian citizen or permanent-resident co-signer or co-borrower. Eligibility may also depend on the student’s program and level of study.

Specialized International Education Lenders

Some private lenders specialize in financing international students. Depending on the lender, school and program, financing may sometimes be available without a traditional Canadian co-signer. Students should verify school eligibility, interest rates, fees, currency, repayment conditions and country restrictions directly with the lender.

Home-Country Financing

Students may also have access to education loans, scholarships or sponsorship programs in their country of citizenship or residence. These options can sometimes be used to finance study at an eligible Canadian institution.

Do not choose a loan based only on the advertised rate. Approval conditions, variable versus fixed interest, currency risk, co-signer obligations, administrative charges, repayment timing and total borrowing costs can materially affect what you ultimately repay. Always read the lender’s current terms before signing an agreement.

Financing & Your Canadian Study Permit

Education financing can also be relevant when preparing proof of financial support for a Canadian study permit.

IRCC requires applicants to show that they have enough money without relying on employment in Canada to pay tuition, living expenses and transportation for themselves and accompanying family members.

For study-permit applications submitted on or after September 1, 2026, a single applicant studying outside Quebec must currently demonstrate at least CAD $23,448 for first-year living expenses, in addition to tuition and transportation costs. Different amounts apply for accompanying family members, and Quebec has separate financial-capacity rules.

IRCC lists several examples of documents that may support proof of funds, including bank statements, proof of scholarships, certain Canadian bank accounts and proof of a student or education loan from a bank.

What to Compare Before Accepting a Loan

Borrowing for education is a significant financial commitment. Before accepting an offer, compare the complete terms rather than focusing only on how much you can borrow.

  • Fixed or variable interest rate
  • Interest charged while studying
  • Required monthly payments
  • Repayment start date
  • Length of the repayment period
  • Co-signer or guarantor requirements
  • Application and administrative fees
  • Maximum borrowing limits
  • Currency in which the loan must be repaid
  • Early repayment rules
  • Consequences of missed payments
